Matvey Borisovich Kogan-Shats (1911–1989) is a celebrated Ukrainian landscape painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and are highly appreciated by collectors for their poetic-realist style, finely tuned color sense, and calm balance. He is known particularly for his idyllic, atmospheric countryside scenes which resist exaggerated ideology and focus instead on the beauty of nature itself.

Kogan-Shats’s art is marked by its quiet lyricism, mastery of plein air technique, and a sensitivity to light and mood. His landscapes often depict rural Ukraine, rivers, fields, and trees; there is little to no emphasis on industrial or propagandistic motifs — his strength lies in capturing introspective, meditative moments in nature that remain deeply resonant.

Born in 1911 in Mogilev-Podolsky (now Vinnytsia region), Kogan-Shats studied at the Kyiv Art Institute, graduating in 1939 in the studio of Oleksiy Shovkunenko. During the Second World War he served in the Soviet Army, while continuing to paint when possible. After the war he resumed his artistic career, and in 1947 he became an active exhibitor in republican shows. That same year, he was admitted to the USSR Union of Artists.

His works are included in major Ukrainian museums — the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Taras Shevchenko National Museum, and regional art museums in Berdyansk, Mykolaiv, and Poltava — as well as in private collections. He spent most of his creative life working in Kyiv, where he passed away on March 21, 1989.
