Georgy Stepanovich Melikhov (1908–1985) is a world-famous Ukrainian painter and educator whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain highly valued by collectors. Known for his powerful genre paintings, portraits, and historical themes, he is celebrated as a master of realism with a deep sense of psychological insight and national identity.

Melikhov’s art is distinguished by clarity of composition, mastery of form, and vivid color, along with a strong narrative dimension. His major works—such as Young Taras Shevchenko in the workshop of K. P. Bryullov (1947), A. M. Gorky in Ukraine (1957), Spring of 1945 (1960), and Delegates of the First Congress of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Ukraine in M. (1969)—combine historic and social themes with human emotion. He was also a respected teacher and public figure in the artistic community.

Born on May 11 (Julian Calendar) / May 24 (Gregorian Calendar), 1908 in Kharkiv, Melikhov studied at both the Kharkiv and Kyiv Art Institutes under mentors including P. Volokidin, F. Krichevsky, S. Prokhorov, M. Sharonov, S. Grigoryev, and K. Eleva. After World War II, from 1945 to 1961, he taught at the Kyiv State Art Institute—becoming an Associate Professor in 1948 and a full Professor in 1960. He became Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR in 1951, received the Stalin Prize (third degree) in 1948, and was awarded the title People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1967. He served as Secretary of the Board of the Union of Artists of the USSR from 1956 to 1960, and since 1979 was a member of the USSR Academy of Arts.

His works are preserved in the National Art Museum of Ukraine and many museum and private collections both within Ukraine and abroad. Regularly presented at international auction houses, Melikhov’s paintings continue to be sought after for their artistic excellence, cultural significance, and strong realism.

FAQs

What does “Sold – One-of-a-Kind Piece” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold and no reproductions are available. Each artwork is unique and only exists in a single copy.

What does “Author's Repetition Available” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold, but the artist can create a new original based on the same idea and composition.

An Author's Repetition is not a print or copy — it's a new, hand-painted artwork by the same artist, with minor differences that reflect the natural process of painting.
