The Oil painting on Cardboard titled “Evening envelops the city” conveys an atmosphere of surreal stillness, where reality and imagination merge into a single poetic vision. The composition unfolds like a fleeting dreamscape, a scene imbued with both warmth and mystery. Executed with thick, dynamic strokes of oil on cardboard, the painting feels alive with texture, as though each gesture of the brush carries an emotional resonance. The rough surface of the cardboard enhances this effect, emphasizing the physicality of the impasto and reinforcing the raw immediacy of the work. At the heart of the painting lies the interplay between light and shadow. On the left side, the sky glows with golden and ochre tones, as if the last rays of a sun are scattering their brilliance across the horizon. This radiant glow, rendered in broad, layered strokes, illuminates the nearby blossoming tree with shades of pale pink, lavender, and mauve. The tree, delicate yet vibrant, acts as a bridge between the earthly and the ethereal, its branches spreading like fragments of a dream illuminated by twilight. The blossoms, painted in quick yet decisive gestures, shimmer with ephemeral beauty, suggesting both fragility and resilience. Behind this bloom of color, in sharp contrast, emerges the shadowed mass of a building, painted in deep blue and violet. Its solid, geometric presence stands as a symbol of permanence, casting long, quiet shadows over the landscape. Unlike the natural elements, its rigid lines feel almost dreamlike in their stillness, embodying the idea of a “dream that casts shadows.” Its somber hue amplifies the drama of the scene, grounding the luminous atmosphere and highlighting the delicate balance between human structures and the untamed poetry of nature. The building feels simultaneously present and distant, like an echo in memory, making it appear as much an idea as a physical form. The ground below is painted with earthy strokes of deep green, russet, and amber, capturing the richness of foliage and soil. The brushwork here is vigorous and layered, suggesting wild growth and natural energy. The greens contrast vividly with the luminous yellows and fiery oranges scattered across the left side, evoking the vibrant dynamism of a landscape suspended between day and night, reality and reverie. A narrow path winds into the scene, guiding the viewer’s gaze inward and inviting them to journey through this fusion of dream and land.
