David Davidovich Burliuk (1882–1967) is a world-famous Ukrainian-born painter, poet, and theorist, often referred to as the “father of R. Futurism”. His works have been presented at leading international auctions and are prized by collectors for their historical significance, bold experimentation, and vibrant artistic language.

Burliuk’s paintings are celebrated for their expressive colors, daring compositions, and avant-garde spirit. Blending primitivism, symbolism, and futurism, his art embodies the restless search for new forms and the radical break with tradition that defined the early 20th century avant-garde. Alongside his canvases, his intellectual contributions shaped an entire artistic movement, influencing generations of modernists across Europe and America.

Born on July 21, 1882 in Kharkiv region (then part of the R. Empire, now Ukraine), Burliuk studied at the Kazan School of Art (1898), the Odessa Art School (1900–1902), and later at the Munich Royal Academy of Arts and the Paris Académie Julian. In 1910, he became one of the leaders of the Futurist movement, organizing exhibitions and publishing manifestos with Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, and Kruchenykh. After the revolution, Burliuk emigrated—first to Japan in 1920, then to the United States in 1922—where he continued his prolific artistic career.

He became a U.S. citizen in 1941, and his home in Long Island turned into a cultural hub for artists and intellectuals. Throughout his life, Burliuk exhibited internationally, earning recognition in Europe, Japan, and the Americas. His works today are preserved in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Tretyakov Gallery, and countless private collections worldwide.

David Burliuk’s legacy lies not only in his canvases but also in his role as a revolutionary force in modern art. His works remain highly sought after at international auctions, offering collectors a chance to own a piece of avant-garde history.
