About the artist: It comes from an old noble family princes Chegodaeva. Born in the family of the famous scientist-chemist and statesman Prince Dmitry Nikolaevich and Julia Nikolaevna (nee Matyavina-Pinyatelli [1]) Chegodaev.
In 1922 he entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of M. State University, and in 1925 - at the Department of Theory and History of Art, from which he graduated in 1929
In 1923-1926 - Researcher at the Museum of Leo Tolstoy.
From 1927 to 1941 - Researcher, scientific secretary, head of the engraving study room of the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin.
From 1936 to 1941 - Art editor of the publishing house "Children's Literature".
From 1939 to 1969 - taught at the M. Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov, professor.
At the beginning of World War II, together with his students, he volunteered to join the M. People’s Militia (L. Region). In the ranks of the 18th Infantry Division, at Vyazma was surrounded. He fought on the Reserve and 1st Ukrainian Fronts, a participant in the Battle of M. and Sturm Berlin. From 1944 to 1945, he headed the trophy commission for the salvation, collection and export of the most valuable works of art from Germany.
From 1945 to 1950 - The main keeper of the special fund of the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin (paintings and sculptures from the collection of the Dresden Gallery).
From 1948 to 1957 - Researcher at the Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. In 1952 he defended his thesis on the work of D. Shmarinov.
From 1957 to 1994 - Head of the Western classical art sector of the Institute of Theory of Arts of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now the All-R. Research Institute of Art Studies).
Author of more than thirty books and three hundred articles on the history of classical art, contemporary art in Western Europe, America and R..
He was buried in M. at the Vostryakovsky cemetery.
