Short Biography

Vasyl Dmytrovych Yermilov (1894–1968) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, designer, and teacher—one of the leading figures of the Ukrainian avant-garde. Born in Kharkiv, he studied at the Kharkiv Art School and later at VKhUTEMAS in M., where he encountered the ideas of Constructivism and Suprematism. Throughout his life he combined creative practice with teaching, shaping a new generation of Ukrainian artists.

Creative Legacy

Yermilov was a pioneer in applying avant-garde principles to design. His work included:

  • book and magazine design

  • posters and shop-window displays

  • monumental art projects

  • interior design

  • exhibition installations

  • experiments with typography

He was particularly known for collaborations with literary groups such as the Futurists and the circle of Nova Generatsiia (New Generation).

Stylistic Features

Yermilov developed a distinctive visual language defined by:

  • Geometric forms: circles, squares, triangles, simple and precise

  • Bold palette: red, black, yellow, and blue—colors of energy and movement

  • Constructivist logic: every line and form carried a functional meaning

  • Typography as art: lettering treated as a visual element, not just text

Role in Ukrainian Design

Yermilov is regarded as one of the founders of Ukrainian graphic design. His work set new standards for printed matter and visual communication, and many of his innovations anticipated later global design trends.

Teaching & Influence

As a teacher in Kharkiv’s art schools, Yermilov fostered an environment where young artists absorbed not only technical skills but also the philosophy of the avant-garde—the conviction that art should change the world.

Significance & Recognition

Despite repressions and ideological pressures, Yermilov’s art has retained its relevance and vitality. Today his works are held in Ukrainian and international museums, and his name stands among the key figures of the European avant-garde. The Yermilov Center for Contemporary Art in Kharkiv was named in his honor.

Collectability

Paintings, graphic works, and book covers by Yermilov are prized for their aesthetic and historical importance. They are extremely rare on the market, making each appearance at auction a significant event for collectors of avant-garde art.
