Biography

Albin Stanislavovych Havdzynsky (1923–2014) was a Ukrainian painter, People’s Artist of Ukraine, and laureate of the Shevchenko National Prize. Born in the village of Vesnyane (Mykolaiv region), he studied after World War II at the Odesa Art School and later graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute, receiving a solid academic training. He devoted his life and art to Ukraine’s south—especially Odesa, the Black Sea coast, and the steppe landscapes—and spent many years teaching, shaping new generations of Ukrainian artists.

Themes & Hallmarks

Havdzynsky worked primarily in landscape, still life, and thematic genre scenes. His canvases are filled with light, air, and the energy of the southern sun. Favorite subjects include the Black Sea shoreline, daily life in Odesa, city parks and squares, children playing on the beach, industrial vistas, and port scenes. He portrayed everyday life with warmth and sincerity, leaving a palpable sense of affection in every brushstroke.
