Alexander Alexandrovich Deineka (1899–1969) is a world-famous Ukrainian-born painter and graphic artist whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain highly prized by collectors. He is celebrated as one of the most important masters of socialist realism and monumental art, combining heroic imagery with lyrical sensitivity.

Deineka’s paintings are admired for their clarity of composition, strong sense of rhythm, and expressive treatment of the human figure. His works — from dynamic depictions of labor and sport to lyrical landscapes and portraits — reflect both the spirit of his era and a timeless search for harmony. His distinctive style, balancing realism with modernist elements, made him one of the defining figures of 20th-century Soviet and Ukrainian art.

Born on May 20, 1899, in Kursk, into a Ukrainian family, Deineka studied at the Kursk Painting Studio (1914–1918) and later at the Kharkiv Art Institute and the VKhUTEMAS in M. (1920–1925). He quickly gained recognition as a brilliant draftsman and painter, becoming one of the founders of the “OST” group (Society of Easel Painters). In the 1930s–1950s he created some of his most celebrated works, including The Defense of S. (1942) and The Goalkeeper (1934).

Deineka received the title People’s Artist of the USSR (1963) and was elected a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. His paintings and monumental works are preserved in the Tretyakov Gallery, the R. Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, and in numerous international collections. Regularly presented at international auction houses, Deineka’s works remain in strong demand for their artistic brilliance, historical importance, and enduring emotional impact.
