About the artist: She was born in St.P.. She received her art education at the school of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, from which she graduated in 1917. She was a student of I. Ya. Bilibin. During her studies, Maria was repeatedly sent on business trips, both in R. and abroad. In addition, she toured the northern R. cities with her school friend A.V. Shchekatikhina. After graduating from school, Lebedeva worked with graphics and in the field of decorative arts. She exhibited her works at the exhibitions of the World of Art and the Community of Artists. After the October Revolution of 1917, she worked in secondary schools as a drawing teacher, as well as an art director in children's clubs.

From 1919 to 1924, Lebedeva worked first in the branch of the painting workshop at the former school of Baron A.L.Stieglitz, and later at the State Porcelain Factory itself. In the period from 1924 to 1927 he returned to teaching and taught applied arts classes at the Vitebsk Art College. From 1933 to 1940, with some interruptions, Lebedeva worked at the M. Art Institute, then at the L. Porcelain Factory. At this time, she makes a great contribution to the development and use of motives of national folk graphics in B. applied art and book graphics. Over the years of her work at the L. Porcelain Factory, the artist has made quite a few interesting sketches for painting porcelain. In the future, Lebedeva's works were exhibited at many domestic and foreign exhibitions, among which it is worth highlighting the International Art Exhibition in Paris in 1925 and the exhibition of R. art in Vienna and Berlin in 1930.

In many of the artist's works, one can notice the unity and struggle of opposites, symbols of the old and the new, the past and the present, or the present and the future. There are practically no symbols of Soviet power in them or screaming slogans located around the side of the plate or in the center of it. If Lebedeva did work to agitate the new government and the October Revolution, then they, undoubtedly, stood out against the general background in their originality and expressiveness. Maria Lebedeva signed her works with the letter "M" with a swan depicted above it. On some of the works on the obverse, you can find the artist's full signature: "Maria Lebedeva".

FAQs

What does “Sold – One-of-a-Kind Piece” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold and no reproductions are available. Each artwork is unique and only exists in a single copy.

What does “Author's Repetition Available” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold, but the artist can create a new original based on the same idea and composition.

An Author's Repetition is not a print or copy — it's a new, hand-painted artwork by the same artist, with minor differences that reflect the natural process of painting.
