Leonid Ilyich Chichkan (1911–1977) is a celebrated Soviet-Ukrainian painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and are highly valued by collectors. Honored as a key figure of socialist realism, he is appreciated for his thematic paintings, landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes, especially those reflecting the life and scenery of the Carpathians and the Hutsuls.

Chichkan’s art is distinguished by strong composition, rich color, and emotional sincerity. His works often depict the romantic beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, the strength and character of the local people, still lifes, and portraits imbued with dignity. Whether in sweeping landscapes or intimate portraiture, his paintings combine academic training with national subject matter in a way that resonates with both public institutions and private collectors.

Born on August 21 (or 2), 1911 in Ekaterinodar (now Krasnodar, R.), Chichkan graduated from Krasnodar Art College in 1933. From 1933 to 1941 he studied at the Kharkiv Art Institute under S. M. Prokhorov and M. A. Kozik. After wartime, in 1945, he graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute in the studio of Oleksiy Shovkunenko.

Since 1942, Chichkan participated in republican, all-Union, and foreign exhibitions. From 1952, he taught at the Kyiv Art Institute; in 1971 he was appointed Professor. In 1969, he received the title Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR. Working in easel painting, he painted landscapes, still lifes, genre works, and portraits. Among his notable works are Carpathians (1953), Bride (1971), Olexa Dovbush, Loggers, Evening in the Carpathians (1976).

He died on December 13, 1977 in Kyiv. His works are preserved in museum and private collections across Ukraine and abroad, and continue to be appreciated for their artistic skill, cultural resonance, and evocative themes.

FAQs

What does “Sold – One-of-a-Kind Piece” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold and no reproductions are available. Each artwork is unique and only exists in a single copy.

What does “Author's Repetition Available” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold, but the artist can create a new original based on the same idea and composition.

An Author's Repetition is not a print or copy — it's a new, hand-painted artwork by the same artist, with minor differences that reflect the natural process of painting.
