Nikolay Antonovich Maksimenko (1924–2016) is a distinguished Ukrainian painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and are highly admired by collectors for their mastery of landscape and still life, lyrical realism, and sensitivity of mood. A masterful artist whose works bridge traditional realism with post-war and modern Ukrainian artistic currents, his name is associated with the highest honors of national art.

Maksimenko’s paintings are distinguished by their vibrant color harmonies, atmospheric light, and poetic approach to simple subjects. His landscapes, still lifes, and depictions of nature are rendered with careful observation and emotional resonance—capturing both the physical world and a contemplative mood.

Born on December 31, 1924 in Yaropovychi village, Zhytomyr region, Maksimenko studied in 1941–1942 at the art studio led by B. Degtyarev (evacuated to Magnitogorsk). During World War II he attended the Tallinn Military Infantry School (evacuated to Tyumen), and he was wounded in action, losing vision in one eye. After the war he resumed both studies and artistic work: working in Magnitogorsk, later returning to Ukraine. He became a member of the Artists’ Union of the Ukrainian SSR in 1960.

Over his long career, Maksimenko held 14 personal exhibitions and participated in many city, republican, all-Union, and international shows. He was awarded the titles Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, then People’s Artist of Ukraine in 1994, and also received the Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine in the same year. His works are preserved in more than 30 museums in Ukraine and abroad, as well as in numerous gallery and private collections worldwide. He passed away in 2016.
