The painting "Borsch" by Ed Potapenkov offers a vibrant and thought-provoking blend of surrealism and cultural symbolism. The composition intertwines seemingly unrelated elements—dancers, industrial landscapes, vibrant vegetables, and even pop-cultural figures like Mickey Mouse—within layers of abstract expression.

Potapenkov's chaotic yet purposeful arrangement might reflect the complexity of Ukrainian identity, with borsch symbolizing cultural roots and tradition. The presence of ballet dancers hints at elegance, discipline, and artistic expression, while the industrial motifs suggest labor, transformation, and societal evolution. The overlapping imagery creates a dreamlike distortion, suggesting a collision of old and new, tradition and modernity, or even chaos and beauty. Through this work, Potapenkov might be exploring themes of national identity, the interplay of art and industry, or the fragmentation of contemporary experience.
ARTIST:
Ed Potapenkov

Born in 1968 (Dnipro, Ukraine)

1983 to 1987 - Dnepropetrovsk Art School named after E.V. Vuchetich

(teachers L. Antonyuk, G. Cherneta)

I have a higher education. In 1995 he graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and

Architecture (workshop of easel painting of Professor V. Shatalin)

I live and work in Kiev. (Ukraine)

Since 1990 he has participated in many group and personal exhibitions both in Ukraine and abroad.

From 1993 to 1996 he was a member of the art association "Cold VEL".

Permanent member of the creative group "Squat on Olegovskaya".

Works are in private collections in Ukraine, R., Poland, Great Britain, Spain, Netherlands, USA,

People's Republic of China (Hong Kong), Singapore.

With the help of art I strive to change myself. In my work, I try to raise current topics of our time

associated with the problems of globalization, ecology, the collision of the human personality and

society, self-identification.

In each work I bring my own reality, a separate story. Inviting the viewer to a visual dialogue, I urge

him to decide whether this is a fake world or a real one.

I take part in various joint projects and coloborations.

In addition to painting, I am engaged in sculpture, installation, and often I combine these areas with

video and sound.

I am in constant search, I believe in myself and in art.

... the unconcealed virtuosity of the smear of Edward Potapenkov, the ability of several brush strokes to

convey the most prominent angle of the body, the bulge of a capricious shape .... The contents of the artifact are

not at all costing if their good intentions are not confirmed by an adequate level of formal decision: not enough,

but it is absolutely necessary condition for the existence of a master artifact.
