Biography

Ivan Sydorovych Izhakevych (1864–1962) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, and illustrator—one of the key figures of Ukraine’s cultural revival in the arts. Born in Vinnytsia region, he studied at Mykola Murashko’s Kyiv Drawing School and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St.P.. Over a long career he created hundreds of paintings, illustrated Ukrainian folk tales, produced church murals, and actively promoted Ukrainian culture through his art.

Style & Subjects

Izhakevych’s work fuses academic training with romanticism, epic realism, and rich national symbolism. He painted historical, genre, religious, and folk narratives. Frequent themes include Ukrainian village life, the Cossack past, spirituality, and nature—always infused with a deep love of homeland.
A master of monumental painting, he contributed murals to many churches, including St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral in Kyiv. His illustrations for Ukrainian folk tales became classics of 20th-century graphic art.

Technique

Equally adept in oil, tempera, gouache, and drawing, Izhakevych composed works that balance fine detail with clear, monumental forms, using gentle color transitions and dynamic, readable arrangements. Hallmarks include expressive light, atmospheric landscapes, faithful depictions of everyday life, and carefully researched historical costume.
