Vyacheslav Vasilievich Tokarev (1917–2001) is a world-famous Soviet-Ukrainian painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and are admired by collectors for their thematic strength, emotional gravitas, and technical skill. He is celebrated as a master of historical and genre painting and one of the prominent figures in mid-20th-century art in Ukraine.

Tokarev’s paintings are distinguished by their powerful narrative content, rich color, and expressive realism. His major canvases often depict Soviet historical themes, life of the people, revolutionary events, and social transformations. Works like “Commissioner” (mid-1960s), “Tachanka” (1969-70), and “October in the Working Suburb” (1970-71) exemplify his ability to dramatize collective and individual experience with compositional clarity.

Born on July 26, 1917, in Bogoroditsk, Tula Province, he studied at Ryazan Art College (1934-1938) and then at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in L. (1939-1948), interrupted by wartime service. After graduating, he settled in Odessa, where he taught at the Odessa Art College from 1949 to 1955. He began exhibiting publicly in 1948. He became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR in 1952, was awarded Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR in 1967, and in 1977 he was given the title People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR.

His works are held in the Odessa Art Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv, and in other museums in Ukraine and abroad. Tokarev had personal exhibitions in Odessa (1949), Kyiv (1960), M. (1965), and others. He died on April 22, 2001, in Odessa.

FAQs

What does “Sold – One-of-a-Kind Piece” mean?

It means the original painting has been sold and no reproductions are available. Each artwork is unique and only exists in a single copy.

What does “Author's Repetition Available” mean?
