🎨 Biography

Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Murashko (1875, Kyiv – 1919, Kyiv) was a leading Ukrainian painter, teacher, and pioneer of early 20th-century modern art in Ukraine. Born into a family of icon-painters—his father worked in the studio of Mykola Murashko (the artist’s uncle)—he studied at Mykola Murashko’s Kyiv Drawing School and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St.P. under Ilia Repin.
After graduating, Murashko traveled widely—Paris, Munich, Italy—absorbing European innovations that shaped his mature style. He exhibited actively in Berlin, Vienna, Venice, Munich, Leipzig and beyond. From 1909 he taught in Kyiv, founding a private painting studio that trained a generation of Ukrainian artists. He was a member of Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) and a founder and leader of the Ukrainian Art Society.
Murashko’s life ended tragically: he was killed in Kyiv at the age of 44 amid the post-revolutionary turmoil.

🖌 Artistic Vision & Themes

Murashko united the best of European Impressionism with the rigor of the Ukrainian academic school. He experimented with light, color, texture, and form, giving his paintings a contemporary vitality for their time.
Key subjects:

  • Portraits (notably women, children, artists, and peasants)

  • Ukrainian landscapes

  • Genre scenes of everyday life

  • Religious and symbolic motifs

His work is marked by intimate emotional tone, nuanced psychology, elegant composition, graceful movement, and luminous atmospheres—academic depth infused with modern color vibration.

🏛 Significance & Influence

Murashko bridged European modernism and Ukrainian artistic tradition. His paintings are held in major collections, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Lviv National Art Gallery, and prominent private collections in Europe and the United States.
His influence is evident in the next generation of Ukrainian modernists and avant-garde artists, and he helped lay the groundwork for professional art education in Ukraine.
