Biography

Anton Mykhailovych Kashskai (1921–1991) was a renowned Ukrainian painter of the Transcarpathian school and a true master of landscape art. Born in the town of Berehove, he studied under the influential teacher Adalbert Erdeli at the Uzhhorod Art School. His career coincided with the rise of the Transcarpathian painting movement — a unique artistic phenomenon that blended European traditions with strong local identity.

Artistic Style and Vision

Kashskai’s landscapes are an ode to his native Transcarpathia. His canvases radiate light, harmony, and tranquility. Working in both oil and watercolor, he achieved a remarkable sense of transparency and airiness, even in richly colored compositions. The Carpathian Mountains were his lifelong inspiration — hillsides in autumn, snowy winter roads, mountain rivers, and blooming valleys all found their place in his art.

Much of his work was created en plein air, which gave his paintings the freshness of direct observation: vivid colors, atmospheric moods, and subtle changes of light. Influenced by Impressionism yet firmly rooted in realism, Kashskai avoided excessive detail, focusing instead on emotional resonance, harmony of color, and lyrical atmosphere.
