Son of lawyer, translator Yuliyan Selskyi and his wife Julia Stöckel (German: Stöckel).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDue to constant changes in the father's place of work, the family often moved, eventually settling in Lviv. The father wanted his son to become a lawyer, but while studying at the gymnasium, Roman met the teacher Leon Dovzhytskyi, who was the first to notice the young talent and realized that he was interested in art.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne day, his friends brought him to Oleksa Novakivskyi, who was already known at that time. Later, Selsky brought him paintings for correction, became his student.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSince the age of 18, he has been studying in the drawing class at the Lviv Art and Industrial School. In 1922 (19 years old) he entered the Krakow Academy of Arts, the workshop of Professor Julian Megoffer, and two years later - the workshop of Professor Józef Pankiewicz.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1925 he went to Paris. There he met and became friends with Mykola Hlushchenko. In 1926, he married Margit Reich, an artist from Lviv.
