Ivan Marchuk
Ivan Marchuk is one of the most renowned and celebrated contemporary Ukrainian artists. He was born on May 12, 1936, in the village of Moskalivka, Ternopil region, Ukraine.
From an early age, he showed a strong talent for drawing. He graduated from the Lviv College of Applied Arts named after I. Trush and later from the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts at the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts. In the 1960s–70s, he worked actively in Kyiv but remained outside the official Soviet Union of Artists for a long time due to his nonconformist style and themes, which didn’t align with the official Soviet ideology.
Marchuk was one of the first Ukrainian artists to develop his own artistic style, known as "pliontanism" (from the Ukrainian word plesty, meaning “to weave”). This unique technique involves intricate interlacing of fine lines, brushstrokes, and threads of light and color — blending elements of realism, expressionism, abstraction, and mysticism.
Throughout his career, he created over 5,000 works and held more than 100 solo exhibitions around the world — in Australia, Canada, the USA, and many European countries. In 2007, Ivan Marchuk became the first Ukrainian to be included in the British "Top 100 Living Geniuses" list published by The Daily Telegraph.
His work explores a wide range of themes — from deep philosophical reflections to landscapes, portraits, abstract and cosmic visions. His paintings are often described as “visual poetry,” each one encoding a unique emotional or spiritual message.
Today, Ivan Marchuk is a National Artist of Ukraine, a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize, and a member of the Golden Guild’s Hall of Fame in the International Art Rating. His artworks are highly valued by collectors, museums, and art institutions worldwide.
